Overwhelming Weather

Fashion, News

Monday blues and you do not know what exactly what to wear? Welp, I have something for you!

A month ago I could not figure out what to wear. Plus, the weather kept constantly changing from hot to cold day to day. So, I looked online for weather appropriate tips and I came across this website called, Daily Dress Me. It amazing because it gives you the weather and outfit ideas. The great part is you can search the city you are in and as you refresh the page it gives you multiple outfit ideas.

I love this website and its Instagram is cute too! Do not worry boys, you can switch to men’s outfits too! Also, you can change the temperature settings from Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Enjoy!

Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion Part I

Art, Fashion

Happy Monday and I hope everyone’s weekend was well! Mine was great and filled with museum trips! I had the opportunity to attend and see The Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s newest exhibition, Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion. It was simply breathtaking and I enjoyed how the exhibition started with a Viktor and Rolf Fall 2015 Couture gown featured in the entrance. Then as you enter the actual exhibition, you see another beautiful ball gown from the all-star duo. These two pieces are starting points to the exhibition because they display the gowns as art pieces. The entrance piece is a gown, which can be hung as a painting and the ball gown is perfectly cut somewhat like a sculpture.

The Met’s curator, Andrew Bolton tells the story how fashion has become an art form beginning in the eighteenth century. France became the center in creating exquisite detailed garments because of King Louis XIV. Here are two pieces from the era:

You can tell the craftsmanship to the garments by their structure and careful pleating to exaggerate the woman’s figure. British men also, were fashionable then, here are two coat-like outfits they would wearing:

During this time, the men’s fashion would be called, Dandy due to the pompousness and polished look of the men’s outfits. You can learn more about the history of the Dandy man by watching this British GQ YouTube video here. It is interesting to see how the modern Dandy has transformed today.

Then as you walk further, there is a section on nineteenth century clothing. Bolton curates, “Fashion of this era reflect the tension between the embrace of new technologies and nostalgia for a preindustrial past, as seen in the revival of historical styles and the continued importance of fine handwork.” One gown that stood out to me was created by the House of Worth.

You can see how it is less exaggerated by the wast unlike the first two eighteenth gowns. There is more detail toward the bust and waist. However, the draping is similar to the other gowns.

The early twentieth century pieces became more exciting to see since the art evolved more so. I adore the Charles James’ “La Sirene” Evening Dress or known as “the lobster dress.” He is a master at his skill and I love the pleating. You can see it here:

Another designer I could not keep my eyes off was Elsa Schiaparelli’s “Cocteau” Evening Jacket and Skirt. The illustration of the woman is beautifully done and it is not too overbearing to the outfit. I like how the design moves and the structure of the skirt’s pleats cascade perfectly below the knees. You can picture Katherine Hepburn or Lauren Bacall wear this.

The picture to the bottom right is a printed dress made by Salvador Dali. It made me so in awe because I wish more artists collaborated with designers more. I know H&M and UNIQULO tend to have art collaborations. However, I mean there should be another a great partnership between artist and designer like Dali and MGM costume designer, Gilbert Adrian. I love this dress because it is eye catching and the art speaks for itself. The print gives the dress a bold statement and that is what fashion and art is — expressing oneself.

For now, I will finish this blog post and write a part II. Please be sure to keep an eye out for it!

2016 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Series

Fashion, Videos

This weekend I binged watched Vogue’s 2016 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Series on its YouTube Channel.  I loved every minute of it and I thought the process really pushed each designer. This truly shows detail, personality and hard work pays off. Anyone interested in fashion should watch this and learn how valuable it is to nurture new designers today.

I’m so happy for the runners up and the winners! They were all my favorite from the start, but I am not telling you who they are! You must watch first — NO SPOILERS.

Enjoy, the playlist here:

#NewMusicTuesday: One Republic

Art, Videos

Yes…I know I have not written a new music Tuesday post in a while. However, I have a treat for you today and it is One Republic’s “Born.” This song is one of my favorites on their new album, “Oh My My.” It is beautifully written and it is simply a love song to the city. The city is filled with possibilities finding love, family and new life. I can personally relate to this song because when I moved to NYC for school I felt the same way. Since this is my last year of college, this song sums up my experience and future in this city. However, I understand I was not born here, I believe me finding my own roots is humbling.

For all the new New Yorkers, listen to the song here:

Enjoy!

Calder and Picasso

Art

Are you already planning your weekend even though it is Monday today? Not to worry, I have a suggestion for you! The Almine Rech Gallery in the Upper East Side is having an exhibition on Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso. The exhibition lasts until Saturday, Dec. 17th.

It is a great exhibition to see because Calder and Picasso’s grandsons curated it. Also, it will be interesting to see which of their grandfather’s works they picked; and to see the story they are portraying together.

I hope to go to the gallery soon and I hope you all go to!

#MuralOnMOTT

Art

I know I might sound like a broken record…but I love street art. Haha, you all can totally tell right?? I saw this on on Mott Street and street artist Apexer created this awesome mural. I like the contrast in layer with the different types of blues. There is a great overlap and dimension into the background. Also, the kisses are a perfect touch to the mural too.

Apexer…if you are reading this, can you make this into an iPhone case? Thank you!

#TBT: Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest

Art

If you need to have a quick escape and have no time to spend with nature I would say go to the New Museum. Pipilotti Rist’s Pixel Forest is out on display at the museum.

I went with one of my best friends, Allie (blogger of the The Rebel Planner) and literally we had a blast. Personally, I thought some of the exhibition was a little provocative by showing the female anatomy and I was not sure if there male parts as well. However, I did understand where Rist’s outtake was, how the female body has continued to be objectified and she uses it as a contrast to dreams.

The major theme to Rist’s exhibition was dreams and I thought she was very clever how she interpreted through her art. For example, in this photo bellow, it is like a dream scene you see in the movies where all the sheets are drying outside. I was so in awe how even the music coordinated so well with everything as well. The only scent that was not used was smell because I literally felt like I was in her art.

IMG_1642.JPG

I think my most favorite was floor two, it had nerve-like light in one half in the room and another seating area with more video nature projections. All of the lights would go with the video’s music instead. Allie described it perfectly, it is like experiencing the film, the Avatar. The great thing about this piece was you were able to touch it and it was made out of some type of fiber glass. Warning, if you do end up going to the exhibition, please be careful of  walking because some people like myself kept bumping into the lights. So please do not break them.

img_1698

The fourth floor was great because unlike the other first two floors there were a bunch of bed and couches laid. Visitors were able to lay on them without shoes and watch more of Rist’s nature films.

img_1685

Each floor was so relaxing and she being able to catch a dream in one exhibition is amazing. The only thing that kind of freaked me out was the personal video pods. I went to one that was very haunting and it gave me a headache. I think the these videos were a contrast from pleasant dreams to nightmares.

img_1662

Each experience Rist gives viewers something new and I enjoyed how interactive and relaxed the exhibition was. It was a great way to see the world in a different light; and it is a wonderful exhibition to attend.

The Pixel Forest will last until Sunday, Jan. 15th and go on a Thursday because it is Donation Nights from 6 – 9 P.M.
